Homebuyer Stories | Tanguanikia Mayes

“A home is an investment, a result of dedication and mental discipline.”

Tanguanikia Mayes said this herself when she described what she learned from purchasing her first home earlier this year. As a single mother, Tanguanikia wanted to set an example for her two children and their futures. For years she thought she did not make enough money to purchase a home for her family, but in 2021 she was determined to start taking steps toward homeownership. She began improving her credit by paying off credit card debt and being disciplined with her spending habits. When her credit improved, she reached out to a Realtor at Agape Real Estate who told her about CommunityWorks.

As she worked with her Realtor to find a home that met her family’s needs, she applied for Down Payment Assistance from CommunityWorks. The Down Payment assistance program offers qualified recipients in Greenville County up to $4,000 in down payment or closing costs (there are also programs in Spartanburg and Beaufort). Through CommunityWorks, Tanguanikia was able to purchase her first home for herself and her children.

Now, as a homeowner, Tanguanikia has noticed how purchasing her home has improved her confidence and self-esteem. She said, “For a long time I never thought I made enough money to own a home. I stepped out in faith and trusted God to lead me to the right people in my life to help accomplish becoming a homeowner.”
