CommunityWorks founding CEO Deborah McKetty receives Order of the Palmetto

Community leader and housing advocate Deborah McKetty has been awarded the prestigious Order of the Palmetto, recognizing her decades of visionary leadership and lasting impact on communities across South Carolina. She was formally presented with the honor during a surprise celebration held at the University Center in Greenville on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., where colleagues, partners, and community leaders gathered to recognize her extraordinary contributions.

As the state’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto is presented to individuals who demonstrate extraordinary lifetime achievement, service, and contributions of statewide significance. McKetty’s career reflects a deep commitment to expanding opportunities, strengthening communities, and advancing economic mobility for all South Carolinians.

McKetty’s leadership has helped shape the foundation of community development in Greenville. She spearheaded the initial affordable housing study that led to the creation of the Greenville Housing Fund and went on to guide its transformation into what is now CommunityWorks. Under her leadership, the organization expanded its mission and became a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), broadening access to capital and critical resources for underserved communities across South Carolina.

“Deborah leads with both vision and heart,” said Mike Coggin, SC Upstate Division President of SouthState Bank and former Chairman of the Board of CommunityWorks during McKetty’s tenure as CEO. “She has an incredible ability to bring people together around a shared purpose and turn bold ideas into lasting change. South Carolina is stronger because of her leadership.”

McKetty currently serves as interim Chief Executive Officer of the Greenville Housing Fund, returning to the organization she helped bring to life nearly two decades ago. Throughout her career, she has been a pioneer of innovative approaches to affordable housing and community development.

Her impact extends beyond capital investment. During her tenure as Chief Impact Officer at the United Way of Greenville County, McKetty led a transformative shift in strategy, directing nearly $4 million in economic mobility grants to dozens of organizations. She also played a key role in establishing the Greenville Racial and Economic Mobility Commission, convening community leaders to address disparities in education, health, criminal justice, and income.

McKetty went on to serve as President of the South Carolina Community Loan Fund, where she helped deploy millions in capital to support affordable housing, healthy food access, and small business growth. Under her leadership, the organization successfully allocated $50 million in New Market Tax Credit funding, fueling job creation and strengthening critical community services across the state.

Throughout her career, McKetty has received numerous accolades, including the Greenville Chamber Athena Leadership Award and recognition as one of Greenville’s “50 Most Influential People.” She continues to serve on multiple boards and advisory councils, contributing her expertise to organizations focused on economic development and community advancement.

The Order of the Palmetto stands as a tribute to McKetty’s enduring commitment to service, innovation, and equity, values that have defined her work and will continue to shape communities for generations to come.
