CommunityWorks Celebrates the Groundbreaking of Southernside West

CommunityWorks was proud to join community leaders, partners, and neighbors to celebrate the groundbreaking of Southernside West, a new affordable senior housing development that will bring 54 much-needed homes to Greenville’s historic Southernside neighborhood.

Located at 846 West Washington Street, Southernside West is a four-story apartment community designed for residents ages 55 and older. The development will provide affordable housing options for households earning between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), with 10% of the apartments reserved for individuals with disabilities. Residents will enjoy modern apartment features and community amenities, including a community room, fitness center, on-site parking, and bike racks.

CommunityWorks is proud to serve as one of the financing partners helping make this project possible. Developed through a collaboration between Harmony Housing Affordable Development (HHAD) and Greenville Housing Fund (GHF), the project also includes support from Huntington Bank, SC Housing’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, the City of Greenville, Greenville Housing Authority, and numerous design and construction partners.

Southernside West represents more than the construction of a new apartment community; it reflects a shared commitment to preserving Greenville’s neighborhoods while expanding access to quality, affordable housing for older adults. The development also honors the legacy of the Southernside Block Partnership, a longtime community organization founded by Lila Mae Brock, whose dedication to serving the Southernside neighborhood continues to inspire investment in the community today.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Greenville leaders emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing the region’s housing needs. CommunityWorks is honored to work alongside organizations that are committed to creating housing opportunities that allow residents to remain in the communities they have helped build.

Southernside West is expected to be completed in October 2027, with leasing anticipated to begin in spring 2028. The development will complement the nearby Southernside East project, further expanding affordable housing options in the neighborhood.

We are grateful to our partners for their collaboration and look forward to seeing Southernside West become a place where Greenville’s seniors can thrive for generations to come.
