Latorrie Geer has been told that her superpower is making people feel seen and heard. As CEO of CommunityWorks, that empathy matters in the effort to build a brighter future for underserved families and communities.
“Everyone has a superpower, and I enjoy helping others identify theirs,” she says. “It meant a lot to have someone see mine.” Described as fun, tenacious, loyal, helpful and compassionate, Geer is focused on what comes next – for individuals, families and all of South Carolina.
“I often say that the work I do as a leader in the non-profit community is my personal ministry,” she says. “My faith is extremely important to me and the work I do to provide opportunities to communities that have been overlooked and underserved is how I demonstrate that faith and put it into action. It has looked different depending on my role. I have worked to provide more resources to seniors, and in my current role I lead an organization that creates opportunity through economic development. But the common thread is a dedication to uplifting others.”
Geer has no plans to change that as she looks to the future.
“I hope to continue my work in community economic development,” she says. “My work won’t stop because I’m committed to leaving this world better than I found it. But it’s not all work to me. I’m taking time to enjoy the life that has been given to me because I’m grateful for all the gifts I’ve received. My biggest joy is watching my daughter Olivia grow up and I love seeing her become the phenomenal person that she is. The Upstate is home and where my favorite people are. I love that I get to experience the growth of this community while making sure that everyone who lives here experiences the opportunities that come with that growth. I love that the Upstate community works together to make it a better place to live for everyone.”
Geer believes that true beauty shines from within. “It’s rooted in a person’s character, values and the kindness they show to others,” she says. “It’s reflected in how they make others feel and the positive impact they have on the world around them.”
